How does Perplexity AI API (Sonar) pricing work? ▼
The Sonar API charges per token and per search request. Base Sonar costs $1/1M input and $1/1M output tokens plus $5–$12 per 1,000 requests. Sonar Pro costs $3/$15 per million tokens plus $6–$14 per 1,000 requests. Sonar Deep Research adds citation and reasoning token fees on top. Perplexity's docs added an explicit sunset date on 2026-08-14: Sonar "will be supported until September 27, 2026" ahead of full migration to the Agent API. That Agent API bills differently again: resold third-party model tokens are passed through at direct provider rates with no markup, and Perplexity instead meters each tool call ($0.0025 per web_search, $0.0005 per fetch_url, $0.03 per sandbox container session). Both tool rates were cut in half on 2026-07-29 (from $0.005 and $0.0005); web_search has held at its cut rate since, but fetch_url reverted to its original $0.0005 on 2026-08-14.
