Personio launches AI Credits — a metered, billed-in-arrears layer on a subscription that its own FAQ says has no other monthly costs
Personio documented AI Credits on 5 August 2026: billable AI features such as the Talent Screening Agent consume credits at a fixed rate, expiring bonus credits seed the meter, and once an Administrator accepts billable usage the account bills monthly in arrears. The invoice-line example Personio publishes — 'Personio AI Credits x 1000 = €10' — is the only per-unit price on any Personio-owned surface.
A sales-quoted per-employee subscription plus per-app fees, with Personio's own pricing FAQ stating: 'Are there any additional monthly costs on top of the monthly fee? No, there are no other monthly costs on top of the basic fee.' AI features in the product (Personio Assistant, AI performance summaries, payslip scanning) were included and unmetered.
The same subscription plus a genuine consumption meter. Billable AI features 'consume credits at a fixed rate, and each credit costs a set amount'. Bonus credits are complimentary, scale with seat count and purchased apps, and expire 30 days after being claimed. At 100% consumption billable AI stops until an Administrator accepts billable usage; after that the account 'can go into billable arrears each month'. An optional user-set monthly spend limit caps the exposure.
Personio’s Overview of AI Credits article was created in its help centre on 2026-08-05, followed by Monitor and manage AI credit usage on 2026-08-10 and Overview of Personio AI features on 2026-08-18 — a three-article launch cluster in a fortnight. This is the first metered billing dimension Personio has ever operated.
The one number Personio publishes. The usage article states that “AI credit usage appears as a dedicated line item on your invoice, for example, ‘Personio AI Credits x 1000 = €10.’” That works out to €0.01 per credit. It is worth being precise about what this is and is not: it is an illustrative invoice line, not a rate card. Personio does not publish how many credits any given AI action consumes, so a buyer can price a credit but cannot price an outcome.
The mechanic, as documented. Bonus credits are complimentary and “the number of credits your account receives depends on factors like your seat count and your purchased plans and apps” — so the free allowance is itself a function of contract size. They expire 30 days after you claim them, and Personio warns to “claim them only when you’re ready to start using the feature, since the 30-day clock starts right away”. Any user with access to a billable AI feature can claim them on behalf of the whole organisation without being an Administrator, and every Administrator is emailed when they do. Notifications fire at 80% and 100% of the bonus allocation, and at 100% “billable AI features stop working until an Administrator accepts Billable usage”. That acceptance is “a one-time action” after which the organisation “can go into billable arrears each month until an Administrator deactivates it”.
Controls. An Administrator can disable an Uninterrupted AI usage toggle to expose a Monthly usage limit; hitting it disables AI-credit features for every user until the next billing period or until someone raises the cap, and raising it “will unblock them right away”. Billing timing splits by rail: monthly customers are charged on their existing monthly billing date, annual and other cycles “on the first of the following month for the previous month’s consumption”. A Transactions table records date, activity, who triggered it and credits consumed, exportable to CSV, and a View details panel records which Administrator accepted billable usage and when — explicitly for data-protection and finance audit.
The unresolved contradiction. Personio’s public FAQ, captured on /pricing/ on 2026-04-17 and on /faq/contract-pricing/ on 2026-06-14, answers the question “Are there any additional monthly costs on top of the monthly fee?” with “No, there are no other monthly costs on top of the basic fee.” As of the AI Credits launch that answer is no longer true for any account that has accepted billable usage. Both surfaces are behind a bot wall that returns HTTP 429 to every automated client, so whether the FAQ has since been corrected is unverified.
