Gusto launches Gus, an AI assistant, with no price, meter or plan gate
CTO and co-founder Edward Kim announced Gus, an AI assistant that answers compliance questions, surfaces account-specific insights and executes tasks subject to user approval. The announcement names no price, no usage meter and no tier gate, and Gus has never appeared on Gusto's pricing page.
Edward Kim, Gusto’s CTO and co-founder, announced Gus on 11 September 2024. The post describes an assistant that can “provide business owners with quick answers to their most frequently asked questions — like their compliance requirements or what they need to do to file their taxes”, give “personalized insights specific to their own businesses, based on their information on the Gusto platform”, and “help quickly execute tasks on business owners’ behalf — while giving them final approval on any actions taken.”
What the announcement does not contain is any monetisation signal. No price, no credit pool, no per-message or per-task meter, no statement that Gus is limited to a particular plan.
That absence is durable. Across 63 distinct archived versions of Gusto’s pricing page spanning March 2018 to June 2026, the strings “Gus”, “Cofounder” and “AI assistant” appear zero times. Gus is documented in the help centre under Account settings and has its own Gusto AI Assistant Terms of Service in the legal index — but it has never been a line item on the pricing page, a feature bullet on a plan card, or an entry in the add-on grid.
For a company whose product is priced per person per month, this is a deliberate choice to keep AI on the cost side of the ledger rather than sell it as capacity. TechCrunch reported in May 2026 that AI accounts for roughly half of Gusto’s new code generation and half of its customer-support case handling.
