Gusto launches Gusto Cofounder, an agentic AI teammate, with no price and a waitlist
Edward Kim announced Gusto Cofounder, an AI teammate that runs payroll from SMS or Slack, flags payroll deviations, monitors the business proactively and connects to Google Workspace, Notion, QuickBooks and arbitrary MCP servers. It ships with more than 20 pre-built automations. The only call to action is joining an early-access program; no price, meter, credit pool or plan gate is named anywhere.
Edward Kim, Gusto’s CTO and co-founder, announced Gusto Cofounder on 2 June 2026: “a new AI teammate purpose-built for small business … Gusto Cofounder doesn’t wait to be asked. It already knows your business, takes initiative on the work that matters, and operates alongside you through the communication channels you already use, while you stay in control through permissions and approvals.”
The product ships with more than 20 pre-built automations and connects to Google Workspace, Notion, QuickBooks “and more”, plus “any supported MCP server you want.” A worked example from the announcement: “Run payroll for me every Friday. Text me if there are any anomalies greater than 10% from the previous week’s payroll, and flag anything that needs my approval before it submits.”
Monetisation signal: none. The post’s only call to action is “Visit gusto.com/cofounder to join our early access program.” The product page carries the same posture — a “Join the waitlist” button and a footer form reading “We’re rolling out early access to a limited group” — on the 3 June 2026 archive capture and on the 10 September 2026 capture alike. No price, no credit allocation, no per-automation or per-action meter, no plan requirement.
Cofounder has its own Gusto Cofounder Terms of Service in the legal index, alongside a Gusto MCP Terms of Service and the earlier Gusto AI Assistant Terms of Service — so the legal scaffolding for a commercial product exists while the pricing scaffolding does not.
This makes Gusto a clean test case for the cohort question: an agentic AI product shipped free inside a per-person-per-month subscription, from a vendor with more than 500,000 business customers and $1 billion in trailing revenue.
