Rippling launched AI Spend Console, metering other vendors' AI bills against its own employee graph
AI Spend Console connects to Cursor, OpenAI and Anthropic to attribute third-party token spend to employees, pull requests and code reviews, with an AI Gateway for model routing and token-spend limits behind a waitlist. Free for 30 days to non-customers; included in a Rippling AI subscription.
Rippling announced AI Spend Console on 2026-08-06. It connects to what Rippling calls “the top AI vendors: Cursor, OpenAI, and Anthropic”, breaks spend down by employee attribute such as team or department, and maps token spend to engineering output — pull requests, code reviews, commit volume — so a finance team can ask whether a given engineer’s AI bill produced anything. An AI Gateway that routes each request to a model based on task and cost, and enforces per-user token-spend limits, shipped behind a waitlist.
The stated motivation is Rippling’s own bill. The company said its monthly AI token spend had grown 80% with no reliable way to track usage or measure impact, and that its finance team found tokens could consume up to 40% of the R&D headcount budget. TechCrunch covered the launch on 2026-08-07 under the headline “After Rippling blew millions on AI in months, it built an employee ROI tool”.
The pricing is the interesting part, because there barely is any. Non-customers get a 30-day free trial and do not need to be Rippling customers to start; Rippling AI customers get it “included in your subscription”. Rippling’s own AI Services Additional Terms contain no fee, credit or token clause at all — clause 3.5 subjects AI use to “fair usage restrictions that Rippling may determine in its sole discretion”, enforced by disabling or degrading performance rather than by billing overage. The company selling AI cost attribution has chosen a discretionary throttle over a meter for itself.
