Workday launches Flex Credits, its first published AI consumption meter

Workday pricing

At Workday Rising 2025 Workday introduced Flex Credits, a fungible annual credit pool that meters AI agent actions, purchasable the same day and included as an initial allotment in every subscription.

Workday announced Workday Flex Credits on 2025-09-16 at Workday Rising, alongside a wave of new AI agents. The launch blog post, “Introducing Workday Flex Credits: A Smarter, More Flexible Way to Access AI Innovation”, was first archived the same day. Flex Credits are described as a subscription-based consumption model: credits are included in every subscription, fungible across every agent and platform innovation, renewed annually, and available to purchase in bulk from the launch date.

This is the first published consumption meter in a company that has priced on headcount for two decades. Every other Workday SKU remains a sales-quoted annual subscription sized on Full-Service Equivalent workers.

Notably, the newsroom release carrying the announcement was still titled “Workday Illuminate Expands with New AI Agents for HR, Finance, and Industry” - brand and meter coexisted for one more quarter before the Illuminate name was retired from workday.com in early 2026.

A public rate card did not accompany the launch. As late as 2025-09-29, third-party analysis described Flex Credits as “a vending machine with hidden prices”; the earliest publicly archived Flex Credits Rate Card is dated 2026-06-26.

It is Workday's first published consumption meter in 20+ years of headcount subscriptions. The launch release is still titled 'Workday Illuminate Expands with New AI Agents', so brand and meter coexist for one more quarter.
