Lattice withdrew AI digital workers three days after announcing them
An update appended to Lattice's own announcement post stated the company 'will not further pursue digital workers in the product'. The industry's most explicit attempt to put an AI agent on a human seat meter was announced, priced by implication, and killed inside 72 hours.
Lattice publicly committed to giving AI digital workers official employee records, org-chart placement, goals, performance metrics and managers, announced 2024-07-09.
The same post carries an update at the top: 'This innovation sparked a lot of conversation and questions that have no answers yet. We look forward to continuing to work with our customers on the responsible use of AI, but will not further pursue digital workers in the product.' No digital-worker or AI-employee construct exists on any Lattice surface today.
Three days after announcing employee records for AI agents, Lattice appended a retraction to the top of its own post: “This innovation sparked a lot of conversation and questions that have no answers yet. We look forward to continuing to work with our customers on the responsible use of AI, but will not further pursue digital workers in the product.”
The reversal was covered within days by Fortune, Inc., HR Grapevine and BankInfoSecurity, and the objection quoted most often from practitioners was that treating AI agents as employees disrespects the humanity of the people already on payroll. Hacker News barely engaged either way — the follow-up thread drew 2 points and 1 comment on 17 July 2024. CEO Sarah Franklin later described the decision to Raconteur as a pause rather than a deletion.
The erasure from Lattice’s own surfaces is close to complete. Both lattice.com/digital-workers and lattice.com/platform/digital-workers return 404 and carry no Wayback records at all, and the strings “digital worker” and “AI employee” appear nowhere on the pricing page, the AI hub, the AI Agent product page, the platform overview or the product-updates feed as captured on 10 September 2026. The only surviving first-party artefact is the original announcement, still live, still carrying its own retraction.
Fifteen months later Lattice resolved the underlying pricing question in the opposite direction: on 2 October 2025 it made its AI Agent free for every customer and stated that it had considered charging and decided against it.
